Mahjong clubs and social groups in Malaysia

Organised play in Malaysia today is social rather than competitive. So until a mahjong competition Malaysia players can enter appears, the best first step is a club. We could verify three groups.

Jom Mahjong, Kuala Lumpur

Jom Mahjong describes itself as "Malaysia's first social mahjong club". It started in April 2026, and its president is Zed Lee. It meets once a month at cafés and partner venues in KL. A typical session has 10 to 12 tables, or about 48 players. Its largest gathering drew 130 people.

The club plays mainly Hong Kong mahjong, but other variants are welcome. Also, it is open to all races and levels, and it does not gamble. One session even took place at Pantai Hospital KL for World Alzheimer's Month. You can read more in Free Malaysia Today's report on Jom Mahjong, or find the club on Instagram as @jommahjong.

Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur mahjong group

The Japan Club of KL (JCKL) runs a weekly mahjong circle in its Fuji room. Sessions run on Mondays from 11:00 to 16:00 and on Sundays from 13:00 to 18:00. Beginners are welcome too. However, the club does not state which rules it uses. Japanese riichi seems likely, but we could not confirm it.

Monash University Malaysia Mahjong Club

Monash Malaysia in Bandar Sunway has a student mahjong club. Still, we could not verify any events. Students can reach it on Instagram (@monashmahjongclub) or by email at mum.mahjong.club@monash.edu.

Riichi mahjong in Malaysia

We found no verifiable riichi league or riichi tournament in Malaysia. Also, no Malaysian association belongs to a world body that we could confirm. If you run one, please tell us.

The Nanyang cruise tournament: Penang and Langkawi stops

The Nanyang Modern Mahjong Mindsport Tournament is the nearest mahjong competition Malaysia players can join in 2026. However, it is not a Malaysian event. It runs on a Royal Caribbean cruise that leaves from Singapore.

The 2026 edition runs from to . The ship calls at Penang on the afternoon of day 2 and at Langkawi for all of day 3. Then it visits Phuket on day 4 and spends day 5 at sea. All the mahjong takes place on board, not on Malaysian soil. So you can go ashore in Penang, but you cannot join the tournament there.

The organisers are the Quesheng International Mahjong Club (Singapore Sparrows Mahjong Network) with Citystate Cruises. The Mahjong International League (MIL) backs it. Play follows MCR rules over 8 games. Because it uses the Danish System, nobody drops out early. There is room for up to 64 players.

Entry is free with a Citystate Cruises cabin booking. Otherwise, it costs SGD 300. Cabins cost SGD 911 to 1,341 per person at the early-bird rate. The registration deadline is , subject to availability.

Ship name differs between sources

The organiser page names the ship as Navigator of the Seas. However, the MahjongCompare and EMA listings say Mariner of the Seas. Check with the organiser before you book.

Competition rules: MCR and riichi vs Malaysian home rules

Any mahjong competition Malaysia players travel to will not use the home game. Instead, it will use MCR or riichi. So learn the basics before you go.

MCR rules (Chinese Official)

MCR stands for Mahjong Competition Rules. A Chinese publisher released the rulebook in 1998. Today the World Mahjong Organization now uses it. MCR has 81 ways to score, called fan, worth from 1 to 88 points. Every winning hand needs at least 8 points. Flowers score 1 point each, but they do not count toward the 8.

Points add together in MCR. By contrast, each tai in Malaysian home play doubles the payment. Players must also call every claim out loud. For the full text, see the WMO MCR rulebook.

Riichi rules

Riichi is the Japanese game. Both the World Riichi Championship and the European riichi events use it. Riichi sets have no flower tiles. So if you have played it on an app, you may know it already.

  1. Join a club. Start with a social group such as Jom Mahjong to play often with new people.
  2. Learn MCR or riichi. Pick the rule set used by the event you want. Then practise the scoring until it feels natural.
  3. Sharpen your play. Our mahjong strategy guide covers discards and defence.
  4. Enter a nearby event. The Nanyang cruise is the easiest mahjong competition Malaysia players can reach.
  5. Contact the bodies. The Mahjong International League lists its events online. Also, World Mahjong Organization registration accepts players from countries without a member.

Events such as the Nanyang tournament present mahjong as a mind sport, not a bet. Gambling is regulated in Malaysia, so read is mahjong legal in Malaysia before you organise anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a mahjong competition Malaysia players can enter in 2026?

No public mahjong tournament held in Malaysia had been announced as of 16 October 2026. We searched English, Malay and Chinese sources. So far, the nearest event is the Nanyang cruise tournament from 19 to 24 November 2026. The ship sails from Singapore and calls at Penang and Langkawi, but all games take place on board.

Can Malaysians join the World Mahjong Championship?

Yes, in principle. For the 8th World Mahjong Championship, players from countries without a World Mahjong Organization member could apply directly. However, registration for the 2026 event in Kunming closed on 20 September 2026. So watch the WMO and MIL websites for the next one, and learn MCR rules first.

What are MCR rules?

MCR, or Mahjong Competition Rules, is the Chinese rule set that world and European events use. It has 81 scoring elements called fan. Every winning hand needs at least 8 points, and flowers do not count toward that minimum. Points add together, unlike Malaysian tai, which double the payment.

Is there a mahjong club in Malaysia I can join?

Yes. Jom Mahjong in Kuala Lumpur holds monthly social sessions for all levels and does not gamble. The Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur runs a weekly mahjong group on Mondays and Sundays. Monash University Malaysia also has a student club. None of them runs a public tournament that we could verify.

Is there riichi mahjong in Malaysia?

We found no verifiable riichi league or riichi tournament in Malaysia. The Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur mahjong group may play Japanese rules, but it does not say so. So Malaysian riichi fans must look abroad for now. The next world riichi championship takes place in New York in 2028.
